-While studying readability in the 1970s, Hirsch discovered that "speed of uptake and comprehension" of a text was not solely determined by the "relative readibilty" of that text. Instead, "relevant background knowledge" was also an important factor.
-E.D. Hirsch came up with the concept of cultural literacy, which claimed that, "reading comprehension requires not just formal decoding skills but also wide-ranging cultural background knowledge."
-Hirsch believed that there should be certain content knowledge that should be taught in every grade. He founded the Core Knowledge Foundation that then created The Core Knowledge Sequence and The Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence, which laid out this information.
