Why is it important that students be culturally literate?
Comprehension of literacy
In order for students to understand what they are reading, they must be culturally literate, or know the necessary information required to comprehend the text. When they have this background knowledge about the subject they are reading, they are able to gain a deeper understanding about what they are reading.

Understanding others
When students develop knowledge about a lot of subjects, for example, races, ethnicities, and cultures, they are able to better understand each other. When these differences are learned about and understood, students can learn to appreciate them and in turn, each other. Having this understanding is important to break down stereotypes and misconceptions that some students might have about certain subjects.

Understanding oneself
If a student has the opportunity to learn about the background of their own culture, race, religion, and history, he or she is able to know where he or she came from. The student can then feel connected to those that have come before him or her, and also see the ways their culture has grown or changed over time.
